4.0 out of 5 stars Needed to Buy

First it is very rare I buy a single; it has been a rule for me since CD's became norm that it works better financially to buy the full album then to buy just one small CD for just two, possibly four tracks, but like anything these days the record companies want to obviously want us
all to pay more and now we get the standard single, the collectors single, like we have the standard album and maybe six to 12 months' later they bring out the 'deluxe' album which has demo's and an extra bonus track; you get the picture.
The problem with this song is it is not on any album, not even on the Original Soundtrack which I agree with other reviewers for this single it is not fair.
I held off for awhile but after hearing it when I got the Blu-Ray for Spectre and heard it once
again I realised I find the ballad is just too beautiful not to be in my collection so I purchased it.
When Spectre was being filmed the normal rumour mill was that it was Ellie Goulding who was the one given the honour of the 'Bond' film song... and I was appalled at the thought of having this 'celebrity' (can't call her a singer because she can't sing a note) so I was so relieved to hear it was going to be Sam Smith.
I also like the fact the Bond theme song has gone back to a 'proper'
song with the recognisable orchestral wall of sound
and strong lyrics, for me it deserved the Golden Globe and Academy Award Awards (It is the only other Bond song to win - Adele's song Skyfall was the first)
Yes sometimes personal rules need to be broken and this was one of those times, and I am so glad I did.

Firstly the orchestration and the singing by Smith are fine and I have no issue with either the title track, but I actually detest that title songs are not on the main soundtrack like they used to be.
Anyway I digress and my actual issue is surprisingly with the instrumental version on this CD. It's the same length as the sung version (1 second difference), and again no issue with this, but the actual sound mixing of the instrumental is absolutely SHOCKING.
Why?
Well, you can actually hear Sam Smith singing during the quieter sections of this instrumental which leads me to believe that they simply tried to mute the vocals from the main track but that hasn't worked out as well as they probably hoped, or perhaps they thought that no one's ears would be good enough to discern his voice through the cacophony of sound from Thomas Newman.
What's even more unforgivable because of this is that the orchestrated version on the Spectre soundtrack is shorter and you do not hear Sam Smith's voice in the background, as you'd expect from an instrumental track.
I wasn't sure what rating to even give this CD single as I don't buy them often but I do like the song and the instrumental, but my gripe is for the audio ineptitude that was employed in producing the instrumental and so for that reason I give it a low rating.

I think this is a vastly underrated track. Being a keen Bond fan my wife and I love the variety of the opening music and personally Sam’s is up there with the best!
